Game Review

Still basking in the triumph of the previous week’s victory over Fitzroy, the Blues were brought back to earth with a thud when they were easily beaten by Melbourne at the MCG.

Carlton began the game well, and their aerial ability gave the visitors a slight advantage at quarter time. But from then on the Demons lifted, and with winners all over the ground they kicked away to record their first win of the season. Remarkably, Carlton actually climbed one position on the ladder to seventh after this round, because all the teams in the lower half of the table were beaten as well. The top four was now Richmond, Fitzroy, Collingwood and Geelong – all 8 points (2 wins) ahead of the Blues.

On a happier note, Jim Clark became the youngest Carlton player at that time to achieve 150 games. This record has since been beaten, but Jim still remains in the top 10 some 60 years later.
