Game Review

A cracking first quarter from the Pies had the Blues behind the eightball to start the game, a point from which we never recovered.

Collingwood came out like a steam train leaving Carlton it's wake. With the help of some "free kicks" and uncanny accuracy they led by 42 points at the first break. The Blues had every chance to get back into the game and take the lead. The Blues kept the Woods scoreless in the second term but kicked inaccurately by adding 4.6 to trail by 12 points at half time. In the third, poor conversion again by the Blues where they only added 2.7 to Collingwood's 5.2 to trail by 25 points. The final term was even, both teams adding 3.3.

Carlton's "better system, strength in the air, and pace gave it opportunity after opportunity to score. But too often the opportunities were wasted."

Carlton were third after 5 rounds with a percentage of 128.8.

Carlton coach Perc Bentley

"Loss of Comben and Gilchrist in the first quarters with injuries at the same time that Collingwood got eight or nine goals from free kicks were setbacks from which we never recovered. Later on our boys fought back magnificently and we had every chance to win. However, inaccurate disposal was fatal to our chances."
