Game Review

Having had six days to stew on their terrible performance against Collingwood, this Friday night clash with Essendon couldn’t have come quickly enough for Carlton. Was it a season defining game, maybe a “line in the sand” had been drawn or had it? Regardless, it was obvious that the Blues simply had to put in a physically more robust performance to regain some credibility and somehow orchestrate a win to keep their hopes of action in September alive.

Chris Yarran was lost from the side to an ankle injury, but the other omissions were less fortunate. Paying the price at the selection table for a team performance acknowledged none too delicately by many observers as soft and weak were Brad Fisher, Chris Johnson and Andrew Walker. In to the side came Dennis Armfield, Richard Hadley and Mitch Robinson for some much needed grunt and enthusiasm, while youngster Marcus Davies finally got the call up for his debut after a couple of listings as an emergency.

With Mitch Robinson nuzzling his blood nut under Dustin Fletcher’s armpit it was clear from the outset that the mindset for this game was different. When the inevitable overzealous bit of argey-bargey surfaced before the first bounce it was always going to go against the Blues. Frustrating it may have been for Carlton supporters, but the tone had been set and at least the intent was there. An Essendon goal resulted soon after and the Blues were quickly on the back-foot. Almost as quickly came an equalising crumbing goal from the hyper-active Robinson. So with the settlers out of the way a period of turnovers and scrappy disposal ensued from both sides as the game tried to find its natural rhythm. Jeff Garlett bobbed up with two in a row to wrestle back the ascendency and the Blues seemed to be away. Chris Judd showed no signs of the chest injury that kept him off late in the game last week as he led the team beautifully from the stoppages and ended up getting an early reward for his efforts with a goal gifted to him from Andrew Carazzo. Another goal to each of Robinson and Garlett before the break saw the Blues off to the quick start that had been sadly missing in many of their recent performances and deserving of their 15 point lead.

The Carlton momentum continued during the early part of the second term as Jarrad Waite lit it up for three goals to extend the lead to 32 points before the Bombers slowed the run. The turn around was gradual with poor kicking at goal really hurting Essendon during their period of relative dominance. A couple of goals eventuated but when Eddie Betts got one back for the Blues the lead was back to 23 points. Right on the half time siren young Bomber Kyle Hardingham was the beneficiary of a little nap from the Carlton defence when he marked about 20 metres out almost dead in front. The resulting miss and the gentle ribbing from Paul Bower that followed sparked a melee that would make those departed from the game we knew in the 70’s turn in their graves. The Blues by 22 points at the half.

The third quarter was a real slog and far from pretty to watch. The Bombers desperately tried to edge their way back, but while the Blues held them at bay they were unable to put them away. Three goals apiece for the term saw the Blues’ half time lead intact at 22 points but the game still well and truly up for grabs.

With the game there to be won a tall man stood taller. Robert Warnock had been a solid contributor all evening but his opening three minutes of the term were a clinic in tap ruckwork and highlighted why he was so keenly sought by the Blues. He decisively won the opening three bounces (with Richard Hadley twice the beneficiary in the middle) and three goals resulted, two to Carazzo and another to Waite effectively sealing the game with the Blues out by 40 points. The icing was to come as goals to Murphy and Garlett’s fifth followed and after a short delay the Shauns, Hampson and Grigg, also chimed in. Shaun Grigg probably had his best game in navy Blue showing some real presence around the stoppages, attracting plenty of leather and disposing of the ball with reasonable effect; his goal a fitting reward. Though the game was over the show wasn’t. In the dying moments goals came from surprising sources Aaron Joseph (a ripper from around 50) and Paul Bower in a rare foray forward. But it was Jeff Garlett’s sixth and final goal which really had the Blues jumping. Garlett had a night out (easily his best outing for the Blues) and was roundly acknowledged as Carlton’s best afield, though Judd, Robinson, Waite and Warnock could all be well pleased with their efforts.

This 76-point shellacking, largely on the back of the best last quarter of the season, was a welcome result for the Blues, and provided a huge boost in their quest for a repeat appearance in the finals. So too did the climb to sixth on the ladder, after a couple of other matches fell the right way, and their chances of staying put in the eight took a decided turn for the better.
