Game Review

John Chick was replaced in the selected side by Allan White.

Heading into the last quarter of this match at Princes Park, the Southerners were 11 points in front, and travelling like winners. But while they continued to hold sway around the ground for most of the last term, their accuracy near the goals deserted them and they posted a wayward 1 goal, seven behinds. Carlton steamed home in the last ten minutes, adding 4.2 to pinch victory by just two points.

In the final quarter Don Nicholls was swung into the centre to replace injured Laurie Kerr. This move led to a Blues revival. Don Nicholls put the dangerous South Melbourne Brownlow Medalist Ron Clegg out of business.
"Roaming from position, Nicholls seemed to attract the ball like a magnet. And when he goaled from one of the many kicks he got in this quarter it seemed to inspire Carlton to greater efforts. These efforts were rewarded when tall follower Graham Donaldson - who with other Carlton followers, had been on the losing end of the ruck duels for most of the day, picked up the ball and goaled to give the Blues the game by two points." (Age August 25)

It was a morale-lifting win for the Blues, after a disappointing season that saw the team end up seventh on the 12-team ladder.
