Game Review

Since the inception of the VFL in 1897, South Melbourne’s Lake Oval had been one of Carlton’s bogey grounds. The Blues had only won three times there against the Bloods prior to this match, but our fourth victory was a good one - by 47 points.

Carlton won the toss a kicked with a fresh breeze in the first term, and set up a 15-point lead at quarter time. The Bloods pegged that back to 7 points at the main break, before a dominant third quarter by Carlton put the result beyond doubt. The Blues’ defence – so good in recent weeks – kept the home side goalless in the last quarter, and the visitors were once again deep in attack when the final bell rang.

This result confirmed Carlton as minor premiers and hot favourites for the flag, with Fitzroy, Collingwood and a shell-shocked Essendon as the other contenders.

At the end of this round Carlton were in 1st spot on the ladder with a percentage of 153.5.
