Game Review

The Blues would crunch the lowly Bears at Princes Park by a massive 103 points, off the back of a superb team effort including a big bag of goals to Fraser Murphy.

Carlton welcomed their 7th of 8 debutant for Season 1987 in 'Magic' Majerczak, who would be welcomed into the "first kick resulting in a goal club" in his debut game.

Blues Look Good
Take a good look at the Carlton side that defeated the Brisbane Bears by 103 points at Princes Park on Saturday. It was one of the most inexperienced Carlton sides for many years, the Blues having no alternative but to blood youngsters. The club has one of the longest injury lists in recent memory and youngsters are being plucked from the Reserves to fill gaps. These kids are doing wonderfully well and Carlton will reap the benefits for many years to come. Carlton currently has nine top senior players, including Wayne Johnston, Wayne Blackwell and Ken Hunter out with injuries. If the Blues ever regain full strength, the rest of the competition really will see a top side in action. Meanwhile, it now is no wonder that Carlton officials last year were most concerned when Milham Hanna severely injured a knee in his first senior match. Hanna has made a wonderful comeback and already is being hailed as one of the game's future champions. He has heaps of skill and is cool in a crisis. In fact don't be surprised if he gets a call to join the Victorian squad for the match against Western Australia next month. - Jim Main Inside Football.

It is interesting to see how the Blues have developed plenty of height in recent seasons. It was not that long ago that Carlton continually struggled against the sides like Essendon because of a lack of ruckmen and key-position players. Now, however, the Blues have Justin Madden, Michael Gallagher, Jamie Dunlop, Ian Aitken, Peter Sartori, Stephen Kernahan and one or two others. The Blues are starting to develop a big-man squad to rival the one Essendon had just a few years ago. - Jim Main Inside Football.

''What a Culling
I guess you could call it a massacre. What we did to those poor Bears on Saturday should be banned - it was almost criminal. For the first half we toyed with them. It was like a cat playing with a mouse, but always just biding its time before it slaughters its prey. The slaughter began after half-time, and 15 goals to four bears perfect testament to the severity of the culling. Again, Saturday proved one thing above all - that the list of talented players in our reserves seems endless. When "Johnno" limped off against SA I thought that would be a hole difficult to fill. You just can't keep losing players like Johnston and continue to win matches. I was wrong. Instead of crying over spilt milk, like a few others seem preoccupied with at the moment, we unearth a youngster with a name sure to give the likes of Beitzel and Dyer more headaches. Mark Majerczak (Maj-er-zak) came to Carlton from the toughies at Fawkner Amateurs, and everything he did against Brissie, he did with a touch of class. These babies sure do know how to play footy. And the great thing about them is that they seem to be underestimated every week. Opposition sides know they have to blanket Kernahan, Bradley, Naley etc., but they dont know anything about the Gleesons, Hannas, Gallaghers and Dennises. These kids are quickly becoming the backbone of this side, which seems destined to fight for its lost pride in September. - Carl Toner Inside Football.''

''Stars or not, Blues hard to topple
Carlton is the best side I've seen in the premiership race this year, and without a doubt it will be right up there when the whips are cracking in September. I've got nothing much else to say about the Bears big loss on Saturday, except that I was pleased with my players committment for most of the game. I really thought Carlton was vulnerable and certainly for the first half I was proved correct. We were pretty competitive, but it's a measure of Carlton's strength that, even with only nine members of last year's Grand Final side, it could hit the accelerator and humiliate us in the dying stages. At three-quarter time I simply asked my guys to fly the flag, but unfortunately they were not able to do that, and Carlton did pretty much as it liked in the last quarter. It's a healthy sign for Robert Walls that he has so many good, young players coming through, and even if they don't play in the finals this year, they will benefit enormously from the experience. Look at the members of last year's Grand Final side that were missing - Wayne Harmes, Bruce Doull, Des English, Jon Dorotich and Peter Motley from the backline; Wayne Blackwell, Wayne Johnston, Bernie Evans, Ken Hunter and Mark Maclure up forward, and interchange player Warren McKenzie. Not a bad bunch. - Peter Knights Inside Football.''

''Bears Mauled
After being surprised by the Brisbane Bears early in the match, Carlton went on to kick the sweep against a lethargic Brisbane Bears. The Blues won by 103 points, it was a very fine effort as they have nine players out injured; Dorotich, Johnston, Blackwell, Sartori, Silvagni, Motley, Harmes, Hunter and Rohde - players that would be automatic selections in any other team. There were many fine efforts for Carlton with established players such as David Glascott gathering 34 disposals (13 & 21) and Craig Bradley getting 32 (23 & 9). Justin Madden came back to form with a fine display of ruck work as well as gathering 11 kicks, 11 marks and 9 handballs. Newcomers Ian Aitken and Michael Gallagher were also prominent with Aitken picking up 14 disposals (12 & 2) and Gallagher gathering 10 marks along with 13 disposals (10 & 3). The Blues superiority showed as they gathered 83 more disposals then the Bears with kicks (210 to 166), marks (73 to 50) and handballs (127 to 88). Geoff Raines was the best ball-getter for the Bears with 23 (9 & 14), however he had to lower his colours to Bradley. Fraser Murphy, who kicked six goals, brought up his 100th in League football when he kicked his second goal. - Footy Week.''
