Game Review
On this cool and windy Saturday afternoon at Victoria Park, Carlton inflicted a morale-shattering defeat on fellow finals contender Collingwood. Since 1897, the Blues had won only four times at the Magpies’ home ground, so this fifth victory was sweet indeed.Both sides went into the game at near full strength in front of a packed house. The visitors welcomed back their star roving duo of Alex Lang and Jack Baquie, while Collingwood made three changes to a formerly settled line-up. Heavy rain overnight had raised concerns about the surface of the ground, but by the time umpire Clarke bounced the ball to start the match, conditions were excellent – apart from the breeze blowing diagonally down the ground to the Yarra falls end.
In fact, that wind was to influence the game throughout. While the standard of general play was first rate, both sides continually misjudged their kicks for goal and there were many inexplicable misses. The one exception was Carlton’s clever full-forward Vin Gardiner, who steered through his side’s first two goals with clinical place-kicks from a long way out, and finished with three for the game.
Although the contest was hard and generally even, Carlton held the ascendancy by 23 points at half-time and went on to win by 29. McGregor in the centre, Marchbank at centre half-forward, Gotz at half-back, Gardiner in the goal-square and full-back Doug Gillespie (who kept Magpie star Dick Lee to just one goal) were best for the Blues.
Collingwood dropped to fourth on the ladder after this defeat, three wins and plenty of percentage behind the top two sides in Carlton and Essendon. Geelong sat third, with as the only other teams left in finals contention - South Melbourne and University - fifth and sixth respectively.
Bongo's Free Fall
Friday's Herald (July 01 p2) reported that Alex 'Bongo' Lang was working in the roof space at the Sunbury Ayslum on Wednesday installing electric lighting. He looked down through the manhole and saw a patient nearing a hammer he had left on the floor.As he leaned out warn the inmate, Lang over balanced and fell15 feet (4.5m) to the floor! Despite this, he was named amongst Carlton's better players in the match.
