The only reference found so far to this player is an item in the South Australian Advertiser on Wednesday 14 July 1880.
In a preview of the Port Adelaide vs Victorians (a local Adelaide team), the article mentions that Port have secured the services of Frayne and Turpenny, both late of the Carlton Club.

1880 July 03
"Turpenny from the Carltons, was playing for the Ports, but he was unable through ill health to go on "following," which is his department. His play forward appeared to be much admired." (Evening Journal July 05 p2)

1880 July 15
"It was anticipated by all the Ports would come off victorious more especially the fact of Frayne and Turpenny (late Carlton men) playing." (Evening Journal July 15 p3)

The Carlton club referred to may have been Carlton Imperials. Origins of Australian Football Vol. 5 has a Richard Turpenny playing for Albert Park 1872, 1875-79, with a stint at Carlton Imperial in 1876. There was also a Frayne at Albert Park in 1875.

1881 June 15 Wednesday
R. Turpenny played for Port Adelaide against Carlton on the Adelaide Oval.
The Magentas as Port were then known, were thrashed by the Blues 13.17 - 0.3

1884 June 30 Monday
R. Turpenny captained Port Adelaide in the match against Carlton on the Kensington Oval.
The Port Adelaide Magpies web site names him as N. R. Turpenny & was their captain for 1884 -1885

The 1884 Port Adelaide premiership photo, in the Big Footy web site (Footy Jumpers and Graphic Design), has R. Turpenny as captain.
