Jack was born John Thomas Cahill on June 1, 1895 at Goornong, north east of Bendigo, to Edmund (or Edmond) and Johanna (nee Purcell) Cahill and he died in October 9, 1972 aged 77.

He debuted in Round 9 and his first game was against North Melbourne when he was named in the 1st ruck and he scored a goal, he played in three wins during his 4 game career and scored a goal in each of these victories, his only defeat was in his second game against St Kilda when he was named at centre half forward and in his last 2 games he was named starting in the forward pocket.

Cahill was recruited from Carlton District, Williamstown and Brunswick.
