Originally from Yarram Yarram and later Carlton Juniors, Barlow debuted in Round 14, 1901 alongside fellow debutant Frank Field. Barlow's last game was against Geelong, in Sydney, as the Round 2 fixture was transferred and ultimately played near the end of the season!

Alex was a product of the Metropolitan Churches League and came from St Jude's along with several other players who played senior football for the Blues at this time.
