1889 Recruited from North Park.

1889 The Argus reports A. Butler from the Carlton Club kicked the ball 65 yards 9 inches in a football kicking contest at the Charity Sports Day held at St.Kilda March 2 1889.
He was runner up in the contest.

1889 April 13
Butler was named in the 23 man squad that played Brittania on Princes Oval.

1889 April 22
Played in the pre season match against North Melbourne on the M.C.G. He was named amongst Carlton's best.

1889 April 29
Butler was named as one of Carlton's better players in the pre season charity match against South Melbourne played on the East Melbourne ground.

1889 May 4
Butler was named in the 24 man Carlton squad that played Port Melbourne on the M.C.G. in the first round of the 1889 season.
Blueseum has only the names of 13 of the 20 players who took the field.
At this stage it is not known if Butler played.

Butler is named in Carlton squads for the first six rounds of the season.
His name does not appear in any of the match reports for these games, but this is not unusual.
The reports of the day rarely gave the names of every player who took to the field, however, Butler's name does not reappear in 1889.
Unless he was injured, it seems very unlikely, that as Butler was named as one of the Blues' better players against North, and the following week in the charity game against South Melbourne, that he failed to take the field against Port in round one.
