2001 Reserves

Reserves Season 2001
Coach: Ross Lyon
Captain: TBD
Best & Fairest: Andrew Merrington and Trent Sporn
Position: Fifth
Premier: Box Hill Hawks
Liston Trophy Winner: Brett Backwell (tied with Ezra Poyas)

There were changes to the structure of the VFL over the summer with three more alignments. In this now expanded competition, only three of the Victorian based AFL clubs decided to have stand-alone teams, Carlton, Essendon and Geelong.

The three mergers of the Victorian based clubs with VFL clubs were Collingwood and Williamstown (Williamstown), after Fitzroy and Coburg severed ties, Richmond merged with Coburg (Coburg Tigers), and Springvale and St Kilda (Springvale). These three mergers were added to already merged clubs of Box Hill Hawks (with Hawthorn), Murray Kangaroos (Nth Melbourne), Sandringham (with Melbourne), Port Melbourne (with Sydney) and Werribee (with Western Bulldogs).

Stand-alone VFA clubs were Frankston and Northern Bullants, plus two stand-alone regional clubs in Bendigo Diggers and North Ballarat. North Melbourne based it's Reserves side in the Ovens & Murray region and it became the Murray Kangaroos. Tasmania also entered a team into the VFL competition, and named them the Tassie Devils.
