The 1940's: A Summary

Against the backdrop of World War 2 in between 1939 and 1945, Carlton fans were privy to some success over the 1940's. In three Grand Finals, 1945, 1947 and 1949, Carlton would win our 7th and 8th Premierships in 1945 and 1947, including a 1 point win over Essendon in '47.

After 1947, Carlton would endure our second-longest Premiership drought of 21 years until the 1968 Grand Final win over Essendon. After 1949, we would also endure our longest Grand Final drought of 13 years, with the 1950's a barren time for Carlton.

Coach Percy Bentley ran the Blues for almost the entire decade, commencing in 1941 and continuing until 1955, winning 2 Premierships in that time.

The 1940's saw many great names play for Carlton as Captain, including Brighton Diggins, Jim Francis, Bob Chitty and Ern Henfry.
